The 2024 (4th) Hainan Brocade and Embroidery World Culture Week will kick off Nov. 8, with the theme of ‘Brocade and Embroidery World Inheritance, Innovation, and Co-Creation’. During the event, fashion shows, clothing exhibitions, and live performances will be held in Haikou and Wuzhishan to display the beauty of world intangible cultural heritage brocade and embroidery. What are the highlights of this year’s Culture week?

One of the highlights is the combination of brocade with a variety of traditional operas. An immersive clothing exhibition space will be set up with art installations, with Beijing, Suzhou, and local Hainan Li style rattan furniture and other matching decor leading viewers into the cultural world of Chinese opera.

This year’s Culture Week will explore methods to both protect and innovate intangible cultural heritage through academic and research seminars. Another main focus is how intangible cultural heritage can be harnessed to empower rural revitalization. An intangible cultural heritage exhibition and village show themed ‘Brocade and Embroidery World - Flourishing’ will be held in Wuzhishan, bringing intangible cultural heritage to life, giving it movement, and showing its usefulness while also offering more avenues for the rural economy to thrive and adding fuel to high-quality economic development.

“After several years of development and refinement, the Hainan Brocade and Embroidery World Culture Week has become a Hainan intangible cultural heritage brand event. Each culture week brings together intangible cultural heritage artisans, researchers, and representatives from all around the world, promoting Hainan’s intangible cultural heritage on both a local and global scale,” said a representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television, and Sports of Hainan Province.
