Art begins with sculpture. China has had sculpture as early as the Neolithic Age. From bronzes in the Shang Dynasty, pottery figurines in the Han Dynasty, grottoes in the Tang Dynasty to metal sculptures and fiber sculptures in modern sculpture art, sculpture art is constantly changing and innovating with the development of The Times.

What are the possibilities of sculpture in the new era?

From December 10 to 20, the "New Pattern of Sculpture, the 11th Joint Exhibition of Sculpture between North and South" was held in Haikou. The exhibition brings together 105 outstanding sculpture works from famous sculpture artists and new creators from Shaanxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and China Urban Sculptors Association, presenting the spirit of The Times and cultural connotation of sculpture art creation through various forms of artistic expression.

People meet art on their doorstep

At the entrance of the exhibition hall, the young girl looked back at the sculptures in front of her. Titled Lei Feng, it is about 2 meters high and was created by Wu Weishan, director of the National Art Museum of China, in 2012. The work portrays Lei Feng walking in the spring breeze with a smile on his face, his head held high, his face smiling, his expression cheerful and warm, which is touching and memorable.

Citizen Yang Min takes a photo in front of the sculpture. She said: "Although the sculpture is still, it also has a magnetic field. Standing in front of the sculpture, I unconsciously think of Lei Feng's advanced deeds, and my heart is very inspired, and I have a inexplicable feeling and strength."

The exhibition site is the resonance between the audience and art.

Copper, wood, glass, stainless steel, ceramics, resin. All kinds of materials under the sculptor's hands, blooming flowers full of creativity and imagination. Cultural inheritance, pursuing dreams in space, rural revitalization, beautiful China, happy life. When the beautiful wordless sculpture works inject the spirit of The Times, the audience feels not only the visual impact, but also the profound social and humanistic thinking.

The work "Looking Back at My Hometown, Tracing My Ideal China" has shaped three patriotic young people who left their homes and traveled across the ocean. Young people face east, looking at the motherland, this strong homesickness deeply buried in the hearts of each overseas traveler. "Dancing Together" solidified the picture of two Li girls and small slope deer dancing together, with a strong Hainan regional minority characteristics. "Mountain·Journey" shows a thin, like suffering elephant, with attachment to the land, floating in the air, the soul is leaving the body, arousing the public's attention to the plight of the object group.

"The forms of sculpture are beyond imagination." The audience Ding Chunxiu happily said that the exhibition not only has the works of local excellent sculptors, but also the works of Chinese urban Sculptors Association Wu Wenshan, Ma Wenjia, Liu Song and other sculptors, which is very rare.

Art resonates with The Times

In the paddy field, Academician Yuan Longping holds the rice ear, is looking intently at the growth of the rice ear, his eyes are full of kindness and kindness, the rice is surrounded by his side, like a docile children. The work Yuan Longping uses the combination of realism and freehand, and the combination of round carving and relief to vividly show the working scene of academician Yuan Longping.

The artist sculpted statues of workers, builders and devotees in various fields, as well as ordinary people in daily life. The work "Returning Home to Pursue Dreams" is based on a yellow-green tone. In the picture, a green agricultural vehicle is loaded with harvest rice, and villagers are sitting on the tall rice, and the joy is filled with everyone's face.

"It is the mission of artists to adhere to the people-oriented creative orientation. Sculpture creation should come from the people, serve the people, and go to the public." Hainan Sculpture Art Society Yang Zhigang said. In ancient China, people usually made statues of Buddhas and sages. Today, artists make statues of ordinary people, and this shift answers an important question about whom art should serve. He said that as a post-80s, he has witnessed the great changes brought by rural revitalization to the countryside. He hopes to encourage more aspiring young people to start their own businesses in the vast countryside through his work "Returning Home to Pursue Dreams".

At the exhibition site, art resonates with The Times. The sculptor integrates his art into the development of The Times and creates works that move people's hearts.

"Pursuing Dreams in Space" with Shenzhou 1 to 12 time axis encircling a circle of one meter in diameter, just like a bright moon, symbolizing dream circle space. Above a manned spacecraft and two astronauts, it is the real record of the moment of space exit. The whole body of silver stainless steel material, one of the bright five-star red flag is very eye-catching, so that the whole work is full of the sense of The Times.

When tradition meets modernity

Su Dongpo, banished to Hainan for three years, opened a school to teach, once a "wild land" began "reading and strings everywhere." Zhang Rui of Hainan Sculpture Art Society took this as inspiration to explore and apply new materials for comprehensive material creation, and the work "Groundbreaking" was loved by the audience once it was unveiled. He said that China's fine traditional culture is a treasure house of artistic creation, from which creators can refine the theme, condense the image, and combine traditional elements with modern aesthetics.

As Chen Xubo, president of Hainan Sculpture Art Society, wrote in the foreword of this exhibition, the inheritance and innovation of traditional sculpture art is not to restore and imitate, but to recognize, interpret and reconstruct traditional Chinese culture. The sculpture art with profound Chinese traditional culture connotation emphasizes artistic conception, image, spirit and charm. Contemporary sculpture artists should fully understand and interpret the essence of this art, and apply it to their own creation.

What happens when an ancient cypress meets a modern heart rate sensor? "Strike Your Heart Strings" uses cypress, heart rate sensors, strings, and strings mounted on a log. It is connected with the heart rate sensor and the motor, so that the audience can interact with the work by touching the heart rate sensor with their fingers, the heart beats once the string plays once, and a dozen strings play in the heartbeat of different people, which is not only the communication between people, but also the communication between people and nature.

Getting inspiration from traditional culture, innovating in creative techniques, the collision and fusion of tradition and modernity can be seen everywhere in the exhibition hall. In this regard, Chen Xuebo said with deep feeling that we are fortunate to usher in this era of multi-culture and development. This era strives to give consideration to the depth and breadth of the aesthetic cognition of traditional and contemporary art, and strives to expand the multiple framework of the inheritance and innovation of sculpture art. Through the lifting of this era, it is inevitable to send out the light of "inheritance" and "innovation" in the two dimensions of "material" and "non-material" at the same time.
