Recently, China Environmental Protection Foundation, Huatai Public Welfare Foundation, Mountain and Water Nature Conservation Center organized the "Kunming - Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework OECMs (Other Effective Area Based Conservation Measures) China Potential case" solicitation began. Haikou Beigang Island coastal wetland ecology and biodiversity protection became the only shortlisted case in Hainan.
This is after being shortlisted by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in September "20 National Excellent Environmental Public Relations Demonstration Cases in 2024", Haikou Beigang Island won another award.
The Beigang Island of Haikou City is close to the Dongzhai Port National Nature Reserve, with four sides facing the sea. The total area of the island is about 1.2 square kilometers, the coastline of the island is 2.2 kilometers, and the tropical coastal ecosystem such as mangrove, beach wetland and seagrass bed is well preserved.
According to the survey, there are 54 species of large benthic shellfish, 47 species of short-tail crabs, 54 species of birds, and 3 species of seagrass in Beigang Island, including the Halophila beccarii Asch, which is listed as vulnerable (VU) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and one of 10 species of seagrass at risk of extinction. Seven species of national second-class protected wild animals, including the Chinese Horseshoe Crab and the black-winged stilt, were discovered.
According to reports, the relevant departments of Haikou based on the rich ecological resources and coastal culture of island island, the development and design of the corresponding natural education courses, ecological tourism products, ecological science games, cultural and creative areas and "Jingbeibei" and other cultural IP characteristics of Beigang Island.
