On May 8, with the first ships docking at the Hainan Yangpu Regional International Container Hub Port (Phase I), the container terminal’s Xiaoshantan Port has achieved a historic breakthrough. Prior to the newly built No. 5 Berth welcoming a 120,000-ton container ship with a loading capacity of more than 10,000 TEUs, the terminal’s maximum berthing tonnage was only 50,000 tons.

In order to ensure that this super-large container ship berthed safely, Yangpu’s Maritime Safety Administration implemented multi-dimensional supervision including drones, patrol boats, and automatic electronic surveillance throughout the docking process. With this, Yangpu has now achieved a significant leap in cargo throughput capacity and service level and made a historic breakthrough in its construction as a “hub port.”

As of May 6 of this year, Hainan's Yangpu International Container Terminal’s annual throughput is up 20.22% year-on-year to 765,800 TEUs. Annual throughput capacity of Xiaoshantan has already increased to 3.6 million TEUs and it is expected that after the ongoing expansion project is finished at the end of this year throughput capacity will not only jump to 5 million TEUs, but that Yangpu will be able to meet the requirements of super large container ships up to 24,000 TEUs in size.
