We've put together a complete guide for asking for directions (问路 wèn lù) in Chinese to make it simple for you!

Getting someone's attention

Before asking for directions, you can start with:

你好,请问……” (Nǐ hǎo, qǐng wèn...)

(Hello, may I ask...)

(Bù hǎo yì si, néng bāng gè máng ma?)

(Excuse me, can you help me?)

Common questions for directions

(Qǐng wèn, zuì jìn de dì tiě zhàn zài nǎ lǐ?)

(Excuse me, where is the nearest subway station?)

(Wǒ zěn me qù jī chǎng?)

(How do I get to the airport?)

(Zhè fù jìn yǒu yín háng ma?)

(Is there a bank nearby?)

(Qù Gù Gōng zěn me zǒu?)

(How do I get to the Forbidden City?)

Understanding directions

When someone gives you directions, they may say:

一直走。” (Yī zhí zǒu.) (Go straight.)

(Zài dì yī gè lù kǒu zuǒ zhuǎn.) (Turn left at the first intersection.)

(Zài hóng lǜ dēng nà biān yòu zhuǎn.) (Turn right at the traffic light.)

(Dì tiě zhàn jiù zài qián miàn.) (The subway station is just ahead.)

(Dà yuē zǒu wǔ fēn zhōng jiù dào le.) (Walk for about five minutes, and you'll be there.)

Confirming directions

To make sure you understand, you can ask:

这里对吗?” (Zhè lǐ duì ma?) (Is this the right place?)

(Hái yào zǒu duō yuǎn?) (How much farther do I need to go?)

(Wǒ zǒu cuò le ma?) (Did I go the wrong way?)

With this guide, you'll be able to confidently ask for and understand directions in China!
