Qionghai is located on the east coast of Hainan province. It is the permanent site of the Boao Forum for Asia, covering a land area of 1,710 square kilometers and a sea area of 1,530 square kilometers.

The city has a tropical monsoon climate, with ample sunshine, high temperatures, high rainfall and frequent typhoons. It has a good ecological environment, and soil and water resources are well conserved. Biodiversity is relatively well protected, and the forest coverage rate stands at 69 percent.

Qionghai is rich in natural resources. It is home to numerous rivers with abundant water resources and excellent water quality. The city also possesses significant geothermal resources, including the Guantang hot spring, Beian hot spring and Lanshan hot spring. Among them, Guantang hot spring has a daily natural outflow of 10,700 tons of water with temperatures ranging from 70 C to 90 C, making it one of the rarest thermal mineral springs in the world.

Qionghai serves as a major transportation hub in eastern Hainan. It features "one airport, one high-speed rail, three expressways and four ports." Boao International Airport operates routes to 26 major cities. The Hainan Ring High-Speed Railway runs through Qionghai from north to south. Along the coast, Qionghai has four ports — Tanmen, Longwan, Boao and Qingge. Among them, Tanmen Port is a key national fishing port and one of the closest ports to the Nansha Islands.
