Tunchang county covers a land area of 1,223.98 square kilometers and administers 8 towns. It is home to 15 ethnic groups, primarily Han, Li, Miao and Zhuang. Located in the north-central part of Hainan, it lies on the southern bank of the Nandu River and at the northern foot of the Wuzhi Mountain. It borders Ding'an and Qionghai to the east, Qiongzhong to the south and Chengmai to the west and north, and is adjacent to Haikou.

Tunchang serves as an important transportation hub connecting the north and south, as well as the east and west of Hainan. Its transportation system is mainly based on road networks, with expressways, national highways and provincial roads running throughout the county. The region enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of 24.3 C. With spring-like weather year-round, lush mountains and clear waters, clean air and dense greenery, Tunchang boasts a forest coverage rate of over 70 percent, making it a paradise for tropical rainforest wildlife.

Rich in natural resources such as forests, lakes, hot springs, traditional Chinese medicinal plants and minerals, Tunchang was awarded the title of "China's natural oxygen bar" in 2023. It offers both captivating natural and cultural landscapes, making it a rare destination for eco-health and wellness tourism.
