Wuzhishan city is located in the central-southern part of Hainan, in the heart of the Wuzhi Mountain range. By the end of 2024, the city had a permanent population of 113,300 and a registered population of 104,900, including 28,306 people of Han and 76,664 people from other ethnic groups, with the latter accounting for 73 percent of the total population.

The main peak of the Wuzhi Mountain rises to 1,867 meters, making it the highest in Hainan and earning it titles such as the "roof of Hainan" and the "summit of the South China Sea."

Wuzhishan city enjoys the following environmental advantages:
A forest coverage rate of 90.1 percent — the highest in Hainan.
The best air quality in the province — with 100 percent of days rated "excellent" or "good."
The highest water quality in the province — with all major rivers and reservoirs meeting Class II or better standards, and a 100 percent rate of excellent water quality.
The largest proportion of tropical rainforest national park area relative to total city area in the province — covering two-thirds of the city's territory.
The highest concentration of negative oxygen ions in urban Hainan — exceeding 5,000 ions/cm³ in urban areas and 10,000 ions/cm³ in forested areas.

With no extreme heat in summer or severe cold in winter, and abundant water, heat and oxygen, Wuzhishan is hailed as "the lungs of Hainan." The city boasts nine tourist sites, including two 4A-rated attractions — the Wuzhishan Hongxia Valley Cultural Tourism Zone and the Wuzhishan Revolutionary Base Memorial Park — and two 3A-rated attractions — the Hainan Ethnographic Museum and the Wuzhishan Shuiman River Tropical Rainforest Scenic Area.

Wuzhishan is also home to the spiritual heartland of the Li ethnic group — the "one mountain, one valley, 10 villages" concept, comprising the Wuzhi Mountain, a Li Valley Cultural Park and 10 villages that preserve traditional Li people's culture. Two of these villages are officially recognized as characteristic villages of China's ethnic minorities.

The city has 23 items listed under intangible cultural heritage protection, including four at the national level, 14 at the provincial level and five at the municipal level. Notably, the traditional Li techniques of spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidery have been successfully upgraded from UNESCO's "Urgent Safeguarding List" to the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity."
