Location
Hainan province is located at the southernmost tip of China. It is bordered to the north by the Qiongzhou Strait, separating it from Guangdong province, and faces Vietnam across the Beibu Gulf to the west. To the east and south, it neighbors the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia across the South China Sea.
Climate
Hainan has a tropical monsoon marine climate. Its main characteristics include: indistinct seasonal changes, mild summers without extreme heat, and winters without severe cold. The annual temperature variation is small, and the average yearly temperature is high.
Topography
Hainan Island features a dome-shaped topography, with low-lying areas along the coast and elevated terrain in the center. The central highlands, dominated by the Wuzhi Mountain and Yinggeling Mountains, serve as the island’s uplift core. The land gradually descends outward in a concentric, terraced structure composed of mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains, forming a clearly layered landscape.
Natural resources
As of 2024, Hainan province covers a total land area of 3.51 million hectares. Hainan has fast-growing vegetation and a wide variety of plant species, making it the natural habitat of tropical rainforests and monsoon forests.
Population and ethnicity
Hainan is a province inhabited by multiple ethnic groups, with the Han, Li, Miao and Hui being there for generations, and other ethnic groups scattering across the province. By the end of 2024, the permanent population of Hainan province reached 10.48 million.
