Cycling has become an ideal way to experience Hainan's relaxed lifestyle. Pedaling through the island, cyclists can enjoy a varied landscape featuring vibrant coconut groves, clear blue seas and lush rainforests.

Here are three signature cycling routes tailored to different travel preferences.

🚴Route 1: East coast route — coastal view & beginner-friendly

Route: Haikou - Wenchang - Qionghai - Wanning - Lingshui - Sanya

Spanning the island's eastern coastline, this route features well-paved, flat roads lined with coconut trees and gentle ocean breezes. With minimal steep inclines, it offers a smooth, accessible ride ideal for beginners and casual cyclists alike.

The journey links Hainan's iconic coastal landscapes — starting from the urban shoreline of Haikou, passing through Mulan Bay in Wenchang, the estuary in Boao (Qionghai), the surf spots of Wanning, and the clear bays of Lingshui, before culminating in Sanya's tropical seaside.

Wanning to Lingshui to Sanya: The landscape opens up to vibrant blue waters, passing Qingshui Bay and Haitang Bay, with picturesque ocean sunsets in the late afternoon.

Travel Tip: The route passes through well-populated towns with accessible supply stops. Cyclists are advised to start early to avoid peak midday temperatures and take full precautions against sun exposure.

🚴Route 2: West coast route — cultural heritage & untouched nature

Route: Chengmai - Lingao - Danzhou - Changjiang - Dongfang

Passing through Hainan's quieter regions, this route offers an off-the-beaten-path experience with minimal commercial development. The diverse landscape features volcanic rock coastlines, ancient salt fields and pristine beaches.

Featuring smooth, open roads, the route is ideal for cyclists seeking a peaceful escape and immersive nature exploration. It allows riders to balance active cycling with a close look at local heritage and customs.

Changjiang to Dongfang: Following the Changjiang section of the Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway, riders can experience scenic coastal stretches before reaching Yulinzhou Scenic Area in Dongfang, a popular spot for viewing ocean sunsets.

Travel Tip: Towns and supply points along the west coast are spaced further apart, so cyclists should carry sufficient water and food. Strong coastal crosswinds require careful speed control, and insect repellent is recommended for evening rides.

🚴Route 3: Central route — tropical rainforest & mountain challenge

Route: Tunchang - Qiongzhong - Wuzhishan - Baoting - Ledong

Winding through Hainan's lush central heartland, this inland route links key ecological sanctuaries. Cyclists ride past mountain streams, terraced fields, and traditional ethnic villages surrounded by greenery.

Featuring mountain roads, gentle slopes and continuous bends, this route offers a moderate challenge suitable for experienced cyclists. It balances demanding climbs with smooth stretches through rural landscapes.

Wuzhishan to Baoting to Ledong: Cyclists can stop at Qixianling for thermal hot springs to relieve fatigue. The route concludes near the vast, white salt fields of the Yinggehai Saltworks.

Travel Tip: Mountain roads feature frequent curves and steep descents, requiring controlled speeds. Weather in the rainforest changes rapidly, so lightweight rain gear is recommended. Cyclists should download offline maps due to weak cellular coverage in remote areas and carry ample drinking water for steep climbs.

To ensure a safe and pleasant trip, cyclists are advised to prepare for tropical elements. Sun protection is essential, including high-SPF sunscreen, protective clothing and cycling glasses. Helmets are also a must. Carrying a portable pump, a spare inner tube, electrolyte drinks, heatstroke medicine and insect repellent will help manage common road issues. Since many coastal towns offer full amenities, riders can keep their load light and purchase supplies along the way.

Timing and safety are key to a smooth journey. Riders should set out early during cooler hours to avoid peak midday heat, reduce speed when encountering coastal crosswinds, and seek immediate shelter during sudden rainstorms. Follow traffic rules and avoid racing to ensure a safe ride. Traveling during off-peak hours provides a more relaxed experience.

Ultimately, cycling in Hainan is less about reaching the destination and more about savoring the journey itself. With ocean breezes and sweeping landscape views along every route, travelers are invited to slow down and discover the island at their own pace.
