The Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, or BiUH, announced on Nov 20 that five new undergraduate programs — Mechatronics & Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering and Business Administration — have received official approval from China's Ministry of Education.

All approved majors are in line with the development needs of the Hainan Free Trade Port and closely correspond to key sectors, including intelligent manufacturing, information technology, the digital economy and modern services.

They're also among the core strengths of BiUH's German partner institution, the Hochschule Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences ad Arts.

BiUH enrolled its first batch of students in 2023, initially offering programs on Computer Science and Technology and Electronic Information Science and Technology.

With the addition of the new majors, the university has now established a nine-program undergraduate portfolio spanning the disciplines of Engineering, Economics and Management, further strengthening its talent training system.

Under its development plan, BiUH will enroll students in seven majors in 2026, namely Computer Science and Technology, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Economic Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Control, Software Engineering, as well as Business Administration.

Enrollment for Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering starts in 2027.

"The approval of these new programs represents full recognition from the Ministry of Education for BiUH's educational strength and development plan," said Zeng Weilu, the university's vice-president for public relations and student recruitment.

"Moving forwards, our university will continue to uphold its international and application-oriented ethos, expand industry-academia collaboration and strive to build an international university that serves the Hainan FTP, by cultivating innovative, applied talent with both a global perspective and a sense of national commitment," Zeng added.
