Hainan Normal University is located in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Province. Founded in the autumn of 1949, the university has a long history and is a key provincial university with strong comprehensive academic capabilities. It consists of 21 colleges, 7 provincial key disciplines, 7 provincial research bases for humanities and social sciences, 4 first-level doctoral programs, 11 first-level master's programs, and 62 undergraduate programs. Among its faculty, 599 hold senior professional titles. The university currently has a student body of over 20,000.

Hainan Normal University began enrolling international students in 1988 and was one of the first universities designated by the former State Education Commission to admit international students. It is also among the first institutions recognized by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council as a base for Chinese language education. The university is an authorized host institution for recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship, and Hainan Overseas Chinese Education Scholarship. Additionally, it has been approved by the Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban) as a training base for Chinese language teachers in Southeast Asia and as an HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) testing center in Hainan.

Currently, Hainan Normal University has established academic exchanges with over 100 universities and educational institutions across 58 countries on five continents. It has also formed sister-school relationships with 53 overseas universities and educational institutions and collaborates with 10 universities on joint talent training programs.
