Hainan University aims to build itself into a national "Double First-Class" university, an initiative that aims to ultimately build a number of world class universities and discipline in China by the end of 2050.  Established in August 2007 through the merger of South China University of Tropical Agriculture and the former Hainan University, it is a comprehensive key university jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial People's Government.

The university has three campuses: Haidian, Chengxi, and Danzhou, with Haidian Campus serving as the main campus. It boasts well-equipped sports and recreational facilities, including a gymnasium, an athletic field, a swimming pool, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts.

Embracing the vastness of the South China Sea and the lush greenery of the surrounding mountains, Hainan University embodies the grandeur and dynamism of its coastal environment. The university maintains a balanced development across 10 academic disciplines, including humanities, law, science, engineering, agriculture, and management. It fosters an interdisciplinary and integrative educational environment, emphasizing student-centered education, moral cultivation, and competency development. The university is committed to enhancing the social impact of its faculty and improving the competitiveness of its students. To accelerate its academic progress, it has introduced a winter term, implemented interdisciplinary experimental classes, and launched "Double First-Class" overseas study programs.

Hainan University actively pursues an open and internationalized education strategy, establishing a comprehensive, multi-level, and broad-ranging framework for global exchange and cooperation. It has formed partnerships with 144 overseas universities, international research institutions, and academic alliances across 29 countries and regions. Recognized as a second-batch "Study in China Demonstration Base" by the Ministry of Education, the university has developed a complete education system for international students, covering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs.
