I. A Brief Introduction of the Hainan University and Chinese Language and Culture program

Hainan University, a comprehensive key university jointly administered by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan provincial government, was formed by merging with the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture in August 2007. The new university was approved by the State as a key university under the 211 Project. Adhering to the motto of "openness and inclusiveness" and the spirit of "self-improvement, dedication, kindness and perseverance", the university has made great achievements in innovation and development. According to the Shanghai Ranking's Academic Ranking of World Universities, Hainan University ranked 49th in overall growth from 2017 to 2022 and fifth among national universities in general growth speed; from 2019 to 2022, it ranked first in the general growth speed among national universities, achieving a leapfrog development.

The university adopts a strategy of openness in education and is the first institute in Hainan province that is qualified to receive Chinese Government Scholarships for international students to study in China. Offering a complete educational system for international students from bachelor's tomaster's andPhD degrees, it has been selected as a demonstration base for international students studying in China by the Ministry of Education and a base for Chinese language education by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, and has won the honorary title of “Advanced Group of Education for International Students in China”.

The College of Humanities at Hainan University has a team of full-time and part-time teachers with rich experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It currently offers six different levels for Chinese Language and Culture program learners according to their Chinese proficiency. The program features small class teaching. In addition to classroom teaching, the program also organizes a variety of language and cultural practice activities to create a healthy and joyful learning environment and deepen their understanding of Chinese language and culture and improve their Chinese language skill. Students who complete the required study hours and pass the exams will be awarded with a certificate of completion.

III. Application Requirements

Applicants should be in good health, between 18 and 60 years old. They should be well-behavedand can fulfill all the conditions of Chineseexit-entry permits. They should observe Chinese laws and university regulations and respect Chinese culture and customs.

IV. Application Deadline

Fall semester: June 30 (Semester starts from the beginning of September )

Spring semester: December 31 (Semester starts from the beginning of March 2026)

V. Application Method

Applicants should register and complete the online application system at https://hainanu.at0086.cn/StuApplication/Login.aspx. After registering and filling out the application information, they should upload scanned copies of the required application materials and pay the application fee (which can be paid via WeChat).

(I) Application Materials

1. Valid passport copy (the expiry date of the passport should be more than 1 year);

2. Highest academic diploma and transcriptin Chinese or English);

3. The Foreigner Medical Examination Form;

4. The Certificate of Non-Criminal Record;

5. Bank Statement: 30,000 yuanor equivalent foreign currency per semester and 50,000 yuanor equivalent foreign currency per academic year.

6. If the applicant is an international student living in China, a valid visa or study-type residence permit and an official study proof such as the "Certificate of End of Study" or "Transfer Certificate" issued by the aforementioned schoolor university must be submitted together with the application. If the applicant is employed, an official employment proof must be submitted.

(II) Application Instructions

1. The applicant should affirm that all the information and documents provided are true and correct. Any conduct of falsificationor fraud will result in disqualification ofadmission.

2. Scan the originaldocuments in color using a scanner. Images captured by mobile phones or  cameras are not acceptable.

3. All uploaded documents should be in Chinese or in English; otherwise notarial translations in Chinese or English are required. Once translated, the original documents and certified translations are to be submitted together.

4. Incomplete application documents will delay the process of the application.  

VI. Qualification Examination

Hainan University will review the application documents and issue the electronic version of the Letter of Admission and Visa Application Form for Study in China to the qualified students after the applicants are approved.

VII. Registration

Admitted students should bring the Passport, Letter of Admission, Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202 Form), the Foreigner Medical Examination Form and other required documents to the Chinese embassy or consulate of their country to apply for student visa. With the study visa and the aforementioned materials, the applicants should complete the enrollment registration procedures according to the instructionson the Letter of Admission.

VIII. Fees and Payment(renminbi)

1. Application fee: 400 yuan.Application fee should be paid when you submit your application documents and visa fees are non-refundable.

2.Tuition fee of Chinese Language and Culture program: 8,050 yuanper semester; 16,100 yuanper academic year.

(To encourage descendants of overseas Chinese from Hainan to return to their ancestral homeland to study Chinese language and culture, Hainan University offers a tuition discount. Descendants of overseas Chinese from Hainan studying Chinese at the university will be charged 50 percent of the international student tuition fee according to university regulations. The tuition fees for intercollegiate exchange students will be based on exchange agreements.)

6. Health examination: Around 400 yuan ($55.8).

7. Cost of meals on campus: About 1,500 yuan ($209.3) per month (only for reference).

8. Payment methods:

International students can pay the application fee and tuition through the following methods:

(1). By WeChat payment, add 0086-13138995246 to get the official code.

(2). By transfer (only for the transfer within China. Please indicate your name and passport number when making the transfer and keep the transfer receipt for verification).

IX. Scholarships

For Chinese Language and Culture program, Hainan University provides excellent students with Chinese Government Scholarship (Bilateral Program), International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, Hainan Provincial Overseas Chinese Teachers Scholarship, etc. Prospective students and scholars from all over the world are welcome to apply for scholarships at Hainan University.
