I. A brief introduction to the university and program

Co-founded by the Ministry of Education and Hainan province, Hainan University is a national "Double First-Class" university.

The university has adopted a strategy of openness of education. It is the first institute in Hainan province qualified to receive international students on the Chinese Government Scholarship to study in China.

It has established an all-round talent cultivation system for international students that offers a complete academic progression from bachelor's degrees to master's degrees to doctorates.

The university has been selected as a demonstration base by the Ministry of Education, as well as a Chinese language and culture education base by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council.

It has also received the honorary title of “Advanced Group in Education for International Students in China”.

The School of Humanities at Hainan University has a team of full-time and part-time teachers with extensive experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. At present, courses are being offered at six different levels (A-F) to students of the Chinese Language and Culture Program according to their Chinese proficiency. This program is conducted in small classes.

The school aims to not only improve the language proficiency of students, but also deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and the practical use of the Chinese language by organizing various activities. Students who have good class attendance and pass the final examination shall be awarded with a certificate of completion.

Ⅱ. Application requirements
Applicants should be in good health, aged between 18 and 60 years old; be physically and mentally healthy, and well-behaved; must meet China's entry and exit requirements, abide by Chinese laws and the rules of Hainan University and respect Chinese culture and customs.

Ⅲ. Application deadline
Fall semester: Aug 10, 2026 (Semester starts at the beginning of September 2026)
Spring semester: Dec 31, 2026 (Semester starts at the beginning of March 2027)

Ⅳ. How to apply
Applicants should register and complete their application online at https://hainanu.at0086.cn/StuApplication/Login.aspx.

Please upload the required materials below and pay the application fee, which can be paid online, before the deadline.

1. Valid passport copy (the passport should be valid for more than one year);
2. Highest level of academic diploma and transcript(in Chinese or English);
3. Foreigner Physical Examination Form;
4. Certificate of Non-Criminal Record;
5.Bank statement: 30,000 yuan for one semester and 50,000 yuan for one academic year (or an equivalent amount in foreign currency).
6. International students who are already studying in China and who wish to apply to our school must provide a valid visa or residence permit for study obtained from other schools. They must also provide a certificate of completion of study, or a transfer certificate issued by other schools. Applicants who are already employed must provide proof of employment.

Notes:
Applicants must ensure the provided application information and materials are truthful and accurate; if any falsehood is discovered, the admissions will be revoked.

Please scan the original or notarized documents in color using a scanner. Images taken by mobile phones or cameras are not acceptable.

All uploaded proofs and certificates must be the original or notarized copies in Chinese or English. If the documents are in other languages, both the original document and a notarized English or Chinese translation must be uploaded.

If the submitted application materials are incomplete, it will delay the processing of your application.

V. Assessment and enrollment
Hainan University will review the application materials submitted by applicants and submit them to relevant departments for assessment. Once approved, electronic versions of the letter of admission and the visa application form for study in China will be issued to the admitted applicants.

VI. Registration
Admitted students should take their passports, letters of admission, visa application forms for study in China, the Foreigner Physical Examination Forms and other required documents to the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country to apply for a student visa (X1 or X2).

VII. Fees and payment
1. Application fee: 400 yuan(application fee should be paid when you submit your application materials; it is non-refundable.)
2. Tuition fee of the Chinese Language and Culture Program: 8,050 yuan/semester; 16,100 yuan/academic year.

Hainan University provides preferential tuition fees for overseas Chinese whose ancestral homes are in Hainan. In this case, the university only charges 50 percent of the standard tuition fee. For exchange students of this program, the tuition fee is based on the agreement between universities.

3.  Accommodation fee on campus

Note: Accommodation fees for other dormitories are in line with those for Chinese students.

4. Textbook fees: Subject to the actual prices of the textbooks.
5. Insurance: 800 yuan/year; 400 yuan/semester.
All international students are required to purchase the comprehensive insurance plan for foreign students on the day of registration. Students who do not have valid medical insurance will not be allowed to register.
6. Health check: About 500 yuan.
7. Cost of meals on campus: About 1,500 yuan/month (for reference only).
8. Ways to pay application and tuition fees:
By transfer (domestic remittances within China only).

To help with the Chinese Language and Culture Program, Hainan University provides eligible students with the Chinese Government Scholarship (bilateral program), the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, the Hainan Provincial Overseas Chinese Scholarships, among others.
