Hainan is gearing up for a festive travel boom ahead of the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. Flight bookings to the island province for the holidays have jumped 20 percent year-on-year on Qunar, while hotel bookings on Fliggy have surged nearly 70 percent, driven by strong interest from families and young travelers.

To welcome the tourists, Hainan will roll out more than 100 cultural, tourism, and sports events from Sept 25 to Oct 7, featuring coastal getaways, rural tours, intangible cultural heritage showcases, and sports competitions.

Coastal getaways remain a top attraction for tourists. From Sept 25 to Oct 7, Ocean Flower Island in Danzhou will present marine shows and fireworks displays, while Hainan Ocean Paradise Resort in Lingshui will launch marine-themed holiday activities. Dongyu Island Tourism Resort in Qionghai will host a Mid-Autumn cultural garden party from Sept 25 to 27, followed by magic shows and pet interactions during National Day holiday.

Across the Hainan Island, local destinations are tailoring experiences for travelers. Wanning has released scenic self-driving routes that combine mountain and sea views, overseas Chinese cuisine, and sports. Changjiang will open a traditional-themed beach party at Qizi Bay on Sept 25, while Chengmai is going to host an autumn light festival. Other cities and counties are also rolling out local markets, hands-on craft workshops, and interactive challenge games to bring folk culture and lively holiday celebrations to scenic spots and rural areas.

Cultural and performing arts events will flourish across Hainan during the two upcoming holidays, ranging from museum exhibitions and theater shows to public galas and live-action performances.

At the Hainan Museum, visitors can explore a Dehua porcelain art exhibition and a joint textile culture exhibition from Hainan and Southwest China's Guizhou province opening on Sept 30, alongside holiday-themed educational activities.

For theater enthusiasts, the Haikou Bay Performance Center will present a modern Chinese-style stage play Dream of the Red Chamber on Sept 25, followed by children's plays Frozen and The Real and Fake Monkey King on Oct 1 and 2. Additionally, a BEYOND tribute concert will take place at the Qionghai Grand Theater on Sept 25.

Folk culture and heritage interactive activities will also be a major highlight. Baoting will hold a Mid-Autumn intangible cultural heritage garden party at Qixian Cultural Square on Sept 26. Meanwhile, the Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Center in Haikou will host traditional-style interactive events from Sept 25 to 26, and hands-on craft workshops on Oct 1 and 2.

Sports enthusiasts can look forward to a diverse range of events during the holidays, catering to professional athletes, youth competitors, and casual participants alike.

Running from Aug 8 to Oct 4, the Hainan Free Trade Port Rural Dragon Boat Race is taking place across multiple cities and counties — including Haikou, Sanya, Wanning, Ledong, Chengmai, Lingao, and Lingshui — bringing together domestic and international teams to celebrate traditional dragon boat culture.

In Haikou, the 6th Hainan International Wushu Competition will run from Sept 23 to 27, followed by a provincial youth Rubik's Cube open contest on Oct 1. In addition, Lingao will host an international nine-person volleyball elite tournament from Sept 25 to 28, accompanied by public-welfare coaching sessions led by Olympic women's volleyball champions in local schools.

County-level tourism will also offer vibrant experiences. From Sept 25 to Oct 7, Tunchang is set to launch a holiday consumption campaign featuring traditional markets, family carnivals, free scenic spot entry, hotel discounts, and free martial arts and oil painting workshops. Meanwhile, Wuzhishan will offer rainforest stream-tracing and rice terrace festivities, while Ding'an is set to host food and garden fairs. Combined with Farmers' Harvest Festival celebrations, rural Hainan promises authentic local flavors and heritage.

According to the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, the holiday activities integrate popular attractions with rural areas, highlighting local culture alongside market promotions. To ensure a smooth and safe travel environment, the province will strengthen safety protocols, market regulation, and service quality throughout the holidays.
