On Feb 1, the Hainan Research Institute of Peking University and the Hainan Base of Sino-Russian Institute of Basic Sciences were formally inaugurated in Sanya city, Hainan province.
Feng Fei, secretary of the CPC Hainan provincial committee and Gong Qihuang, president of Peking University, attended the event.
The establishment of the two institutes is an important step in implementing the central government's strategy of the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
In recent years, Hainan province and Peking University have strengthened their collaboration in key fields such as education, healthcare and agricultural technology.
As key examples of advancing strategic cooperation between Hainan province and universities, the two institutes will meet the needs of the Hainan FTP's development by leveraging the advantages of both the open policy and Peking University's manifold strengths.
They'll focus on fundamental scientific fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, geosciences and life sciences.
Moreover, in close collaboration with top Russian experts, they'll work with Hainan government to jointly build research platforms, promote international cooperation and offer strategic advisory services.
The goal is to connect global innovative resources, integrate education, science and talent, and develop a high-level international platform for basic research, an international talent hub and a global example of Sino-Russian cooperation.
Through extensive educational and scientific collaboration, the initiatives are expected to drive high-quality development forwards and serve China's strategic blueprint through a higher level of openness.
Hainan provincial leaders Wang Qiyang, Xie Jing and Luo Qingming, along with various Chinese and international academicians and experts, also attended the event.
