During the Spring Festival holiday in China’s southernmost Hainan province, the number and value of on-site foreign bank card transactions being processed by the province’s six major institutions saw big increases.
They shot up by 117.33 percent and 88.81 percent, respectively, compared with the same period in 2025.
Meanwhile, mobile payment services such as Alipay and Tenpay — including “foreign card binding for domestic use” and “overseas wallet domestic payment” solutions — saw year-on-year increases of 79.75 percent in the transaction volume and 80.36 percent in the transaction value within Hainan.
The numbers indicated that Hainan’s measures to optimize payments services have delivered tangible results — with overseas visitors experiencing steadily improving convenience and reliability in payments services.
In recent years, Hainan has actively guided financial institutions across the province to provide proactive services and it’s adopted a raft of measures to improve payments for overseas visitors.
By the end of 2025, more than 50,000 POS terminals capable of accepting foreign bank cards had been deployed across the province, while ATM coverage supporting foreign card cash withdrawals reached 98.28 percent, according to official statistics.
What’s more, continued improvements in payments infrastructure have provided strong support for smooth and convenient purchase by overseas visitors.
To further bolster service convenience, Hainan has accelerated the development of payments service demonstration zones and integrated service centers.
To date, both Haikou Meilan International Airport and Sanya Phoenix International Airport have established “Integrated Service Centers for Overseas Visitors,” offering one-stop payments consultation and assistance services.
In addition, six popular tourist destinations — including Qilou Old Street, Dadonghai and Boao — have been upgraded into payment service demonstration zones. They cover key foreign-related spending scenarios such as dining, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, shopping, entertainment and healthcare.
Hainan has also introduced innovative payment products such as the “Hainan Wallet” and “Hainan Easy Pay” — further diversifying payments options for overseas visitors.
Moving forwards, Hainan plans to further deepen payment facilitation reforms and refine a multi-tiered, diversified payments service system — striving to make “worry-free payments” a distinctive hallmark of the Hainan Free Trade Port in attracting overseas tourists.
