Sanya to host Asian round of Formula E World Championship in 2027

The excitement is building in the racing car world as the resort city of Sanya in Hainan province makes preparations to host the seventh round of the 2026-27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

The organizers announced that as the first Asian round of the new season, the Sanya E-Prix will kick off at the Haitang Bay Circuit on April 17, 2027. The championship will feature 21 races in 13 cities worldwide, and the new-generation GEN4 cars will make their Chinese track debut in Sanya. The race will be broadcast in 195 countries and regions around the world.

Formula E Co-founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo noted that the Sanya circuit is challenging for drivers and that hosting one of the season's first races there with the new cars was a deliberate choice by the organizers. "After our successful return to Sanya this year, we're incredibly excited to bring the GEN4 era to the Haitang Bay Circuit," he added.

Hosting international events is an integral part of Sanya's tourism development plans. The city has already hosted the 6th Asian Beach Games and the Hainan International Film Festival — and it will also host the HYROX World Finals in the near future.

Buoyed by a visa-free policy for the citizens of 86 countries and an expanded international air network comprising 36 international routes to 28 overseas destinations, the Hainan Free Trade Port's customs checkpoints recorded 1.65 million passenger trips in the first six months since the launch of the island-wide special customs operations, an increase of 31.2 percent year-on-year.

Moving forward, Sanya intends to continue developing its infrastructure to host international sports and cultural events — to strengthen its position as a leading venue for them in the Asia-Pacific region.
