Blueprint outlines Sanya's green development by 2030

The coastal city of Sanya in Hainan province will create more favorable conditions for biodiversity conservation in the coming five years, according to Hainan's 2030 environmental blueprint.

Under the plan, the Sanya municipal government and specialized organizations and agencies will work together to improve the environment of the city and its adjacent bays.

Sanya, together with Haikou, the provincial capital, and Danzhou on Hainan's western coast, will serve as leaders for environmentally friendly development in the island province.

They will drive the coordinated development of surrounding areas, while advancing the joint protection and governance of the ecological environment. At the same time, the efficiency of resource utilization across Hainan is expected to be improved.

The blueprint outlines the implementation of a series of projects related to the modernization of the marine economy and the fishing industry.

It focuses on combating harmful microorganisms and the control of animal and plant imports, including those used in breeding laboratories in Sanya. Through these efforts, the city's government aims to significantly enhance the level of biotechnology security over the next few years.

Sanya, one of China's leading coastal resort cities, is home to over 1.1 million people. In 2025, its gross domestic product grew by 4.8 percent to over 103 billion yuan ($15 billion). The city's average annual temperature reaches 25.4 degrees Celsius, and its coastline is about 260 kilometers long.

There are 19 bays and approximately 40 islands in its adjacent waters that are suitable for tourism — supporting the development of the yachting industry, cruise tourism and beach and family vacations. In 2025, foreign tourist arrivals surged by 41.4 percent to more than 1 million.
