Hainan's three airports boom during summer travel rush

The 62-day summer travel rush ended on Aug 31, with Hainan's three major airports handling 57,000 aircraft flights and 8.7 million passenger trips, up 3.8 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from Hainan Airport Group on Sept 1.

During the period, the three airports in Haikou, Sanya and Qionghai handled 460,000 inbound and outbound passenger trips, reflecting continued growth in international travel demand.

At Haikou Meilan International Airport, flights to Wuhan, Chongqing and Changsha were increased. The Haikou-Jakarta route was upgraded to six flights a week, while the first intercontinental route connecting the Hainan Free Trade Port with Spain, the Haikou-Chongqing-Madrid route, was launched.

Sanya Phoenix International Airport increased flights and added wide-body aircraft on routes to destinations including Beijing, Chengdu and Hangzhou to increase the handling capacity. Qionghai Bo'ao International Airport coordinated the allocation of airspace resources to improve flight punctuality and ensure smooth operations during the peak travel period.

Hainan Airport Group also strengthened operational and service measures in response to peak passenger flows and adverse weather conditions, including high temperatures, typhoons and thunderstorms.

The three airports introduced a range of passenger services during the summer rush. Haikou Meilan International Airport added a forest-themed children's area in Terminal 1 and launched a luggage service allowing passengers to send baggage directly to hotels or tourist attractions in the city. The airport also held cultural and tourism activities featuring local Li ethnic culture.

Sanya Phoenix International Airport increased staffing at check-in counters and special assistance areas and introduced a full-service chain for unaccompanied children and elderly passengers. A new children's play area at Terminal 3 was also went into operation.

At Qionghai Bo'ao International Airport, a cooling station was set up at the information desk_while medical patrols and assistance services were strengthened for elderly and mobility-impaired passengers.

With the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays fast approaching, Hainan Airport Group said it will continue to improve service and operational arrangements to ensure safe and smooth travel during the holiday period.
