For foreign teachers choosing to build their careers in Hainan, the island offers more than a job opportunity. As the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) advances its opening-up policies, measures covering entry, residence, work and daily services are making it easier for international educators to live and work on the island.

Hainan has been stepping up support for foreign education professionals as it grows its international education sector. Foreign teachers and staff working at overseas educational institutions in the FTP can now enjoy more convenient arrangements for work, residence and other day-to-day needs. The province has also introduced cross-departmental coordination mechanisms to provide services related to foreign affairs, immigration, scientific research and security.

For many foreign teachers, the difference is felt in their everyday life.

From handling work and residence procedures to settling into local communities and accessing public services and education, the growing international infrastructure is helping reduce the practical barriers that can come with relocating to a new country. This is particularly important for the teachers who choose to bring their families to Hainan and make the island a longer-term home.

The changes are taking place alongside the rapid expansion of international education in the FTP. Hainan has introduced overseas higher-education institutions and international education programs, while cities such as Haikou and Sanya continue to attract international talent. This year, Hainan has pledged to further improve services for foreign teachers and staff as part of its efforts to build an international education innovation island.

The broader policy direction is clear: as Hainan opens further to international talent, creating a convenient living environment is becoming an important part of building an internationally oriented free trade port.

For foreign teachers already living on the island, these measures mean fewer administrative hurdles and more time to focus on what brought them to Hainan in the first place — teaching, research and connecting students to a wider world. As the FTP continues to develop, Hainan is working to ensure that international talent feels not only welcome, but also well supported in building a life here.
