Duty-free shopping by travelers departing China's southernmost Hainan province hit 3.82 billion yuan ($569 million) during July and August — up 4.1 percent year-on-year.
According to statistics released by Haikou Customs, 3.809 million items in total were purchased by 690,000 shoppers — up 0.3 percent and 3.4 percent year-on-year, respectively.
During the summer holiday, major duty-free stores across Hainan launched special promotions on products — including candy, chocolate, toys, jewelry and watches, cosmetic products, fashion items and alcoholic beverages.
Combined with government-issued consumer vouchers, spending-based discounts and student-exclusive offers, the promotions helped boost sales of popular categories such as general merchandise, cosmetics and personal care products.
Travelers departing Hainan for overseas destinations showed strong enthusiasm for duty-free shopping during the break. Duty-free stores provided shopping assistants to help foreign travelers communicate and shop with ease — while a range of summer promotions offered outbound travelers a wide-ranging and convenient shopping experience.
By end-August, Haikou Customs had supervised duty-free purchases worth 112 million yuan ($16.7 million) by travelers departing Hainan for overseas destinations.
In all, the purchases involved 16,500 shopping trips and 64,500 items.
