Haikou, the capital of Hainan province, has introduced a range of user-friendly mobile payment solutions tailored for international tourists.

With the principle of "card for large payments, QR code for small purchases, and cash as backup", the city ensures a smooth and flexible payment experience across key sectors such as tourism, accommodation, dining and transportation.

The city now supports two major mobile payment methods: "overseas bank cards linking" and "overseas wallets access", offering seamless transactions without the need for a Chinese bank account.

Overseas bank cards linking

Tourists can download the Alipay app and register an account using their mobile number, email or Apple ID. By linking an international bank card supported by networks such as UnionPay International, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover to their account, users can make payments at millions of merchants across China via QR code scanning, just like domestic users.

Overseas wallets access

For greater convenience, foreign tourists can also pay using their existing overseas e-wallet apps. Supported by Alipay+, this solution allows users from 10 countries and regions to pay directly at partner merchants with 13 eligible digital wallets. In addition, nine international wallets are now compatible with merchants that accept WeChat Pay's standard QR codes, enabling even broader access.

These mobile payment services are already widely available across Haikou in areas such as ride-hailing, public transport, shared bikes, restaurants, supermarkets, hotels and scenic spots. This enables international tourists to have a cashless experience that matches the ease and speed enjoyed by local residents.
